Inflamed Nerves in the Feet: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatments

When the nerves in the feet become inflamed, compressed or damaged, they can cause burning, tingling and pain. The symptoms, causes and how it is treated.

By Dr. Luigi ManziUpdated on

When the nerves in the inflamed feet are compressed or damaged, the pain can be debilitating. As with many other conditions, understanding the causes, recognizing the symptoms, and evaluating the various available treatments is essential to effectively addressing the problem.

Before going into detail, it's worth noting that the nerves in the feet are rarely the primary cause of foot pain directly, but are often indirectly involved in inflammation. The pain, often stabbing and accompanied by a burning sensation, can have many causes.

When you experience pain, it is very important to limit stress and reduce physical activity, limiting yourself to performing light stretching exercises.

Inflammation of the nerves in the feet: common causes and main symptoms

Symptoms of inflammation vary depending on the severity of the condition. They may include acute or chronic pain, foot numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness. In more severe cases, loss of sensation or difficulty moving may occur.

Inflammation can be the result of trauma or injury. Other possible causes include diabetes, some autoimmune diseases, or nutrient deficiencies (such as a lack of B vitamins). Additionally, various nerve disorders can cause inflammation of the nerves in the foot.

Among these is Morton's neuroma, a condition that occurs when a nerve in the foot is compressed or irritated, often due to wearing tight-fitting shoes or high heels. The main symptoms are a burning and tingling sensation between the third and fourth toes, which may radiate to the other toes, accompanied by an unpleasant sensation of pressure under the toes.

In tarsal tunnel syndrome, however, the pain is usually localized behind the ankle and sometimes in the lower medial part of the heel, accompanied by tingling sensations. In this case, the pain tends to increase when standing or walking, but can also occur at rest. If left untreated, the pain can extend along the plantar surface to the toes. If inflammation of the nerves in the foot due to plantar fasciitis causes a sharp pain sensation, like a sharp stabbing in the heel that occurs when walking.

In less severe cases, when the inflammation is not particularly extensive, a conservative approach based on the use of anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids (which help relieve pain and reduce inflammation), combined with rest and ice, often proves effective. Stretching exercises and physical therapy can help reduce the tension that compresses nerve endings and relieve pain. This is an effective option for improving motor function and relieving muscle tension.

This type of treatment has been shown to have positive effects in most patients. However, if the pain is persistent or if episodes recur frequently, it is important to consult a specialist.

Accurately diagnosing an inflamed nerve begins with a careful medical history and a physical examination by your doctor. Performing instrumental tests such as electromyography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can confirm nerve involvement and distinguish inflammation of the nerves in the feet from similar conditions, such as metabolic neuropathies or structural lesions, and rule out other pathologies.

In more severe cases of inflammation, surgery may be necessary to decompress the nerve or remove any lesions. In this case, post-operative rehabilitation is essential to reduce stiffness and pain and prevent the formation of adhesions between the muscles and connective tissue of the foot.
