By Dr. Luigi ManziUpdated on

What is neuritis and what are its symptoms? Neuritis is an inflammation of the nerves characterized by sensory or motor disturbances accompanied by pain, weakness, tingling sensations, or hypersensitivity. In some cases, neuritis can cause permanent damage.

It often affects peripheral nerves, such as those that control muscles and skin, and occurs when a nerve becomes irritated, damaged, or inflamed, following infection, trauma, or autoimmune disease.

There are several causes that can trigger and contribute to neuritis. A nerve can become irritated or its anatomy and function altered for various reasons, including:

  • Physical trauma or nerve compression syndrome.
  • Infections (e.g., diphtheria, shingles, leprosy, Lyme disease).
  • Chemical damage such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy or alcoholism.
  • Autoimmune diseases, particularly demyelinating ones (e.g. multiple sclerosis, Guillain-Barré syndrome).
  • Vitamin deficiencies or excesses, such as beriberi (vitamin B1), vitamin B12 deficiency, or vitamin B6 excess.
  • Systemic diseases, including diabetes (diabetic neuropathy), hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, celiac disease, and porphyria.
  • Other conditions, such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, idiopathic neuropathy, or channelopathies.

The symptoms of neuritis can vary depending on the affected area. The pain varies in intensity, frequency, and consistency, ranging from continuous to intermittent, from sharp to profound. Along with the pain, there is often a tingling, burning sensation, and muscle weakness, especially if the affected nerve also functions as a sensory nerve. In some cases, increased skin sensitivity or difficulty moving may also be present.

Early diagnosis is essential to prevent complications. If left untreated, neuritis can progress to permanent nerve damage, even leading to loss of function in certain areas of the body.

Remedies and Treatments

To diagnose the precise cause of neuritis, a thorough medical history is needed, which will help us get closer to an accurate diagnosis. Clinical tests will be necessary to rule out various possible contributing factors inherent to the actual pathology. Depending on the underlying cause, the most appropriate neuritis treatment will then be determined.

Anti-inflammatory, analgesic, or anticonvulsant medications can relieve pain and inflammation. In some cases, physical therapy or surgery may be necessary to address neurological problems related to neuritis.
